8.09.09 | North Brother Hill Climb
Hideous……nasty…..ugly……soul destroying…..is all that can be said about this ride. In its second year the North Brother Hill climb has already established itself among the pantheon of hill climbs around the world. Riders near and far turn up to have a crack at the climb and test their legs. Sunday the 6th was no exception. Abliet a small field the energy…the excitement….the apprehension…you could have checked the atmosphere with one of Lundy’s rectal themometers.
The race….if you can call it that…started with a “Tour de France” style sound from the GSC mobile…Newell leaning on the horn….saw Sanders jump the pack on his trusty Argon18 TT, what an idiot for shoosing that bike with a 23 on the back, although this only lasted 50meters when English and Hawes blasted past. English only had enough breath to say, “This is going to end in tears!”. He was right.
North Brother is just under 6km’s of sheer torture. The only pleasant thing was the fact that there was some goodies to eat and drink when at the top…if you made it. Kev “the rev” rode like a mad man up the hill smashing, we believe, the previous record up the hill in a mind blowing 17 and a half mins. He got there so fast Phil & Paul were not ready to call him in. English came in not far behind….and then decided to go back down a little and ride it again….lunatic! Catherine Hawes showed why she likes hills so much and took out the female section with an impressive 25mins with change. Sewell and a few others went up on mtb bikes….helps with the extra chain rings.
Another great event and a magical day to have the ride. The sight from opn top of North Brother is sensational. Great work from the ladies and Lloyd to cater for the event also for Lloyd and GSC for providing prizes for those reaching the top.
