2015 Road Race Report Week 1 – It’s Blast Off

Race Report – It’s Blast Off in Week One

The first week of the road racing competition at Port Macquarie started with a bang as Liam Magennis and Sam Cox lit the fuse with an early and sustained break away in the second lap. It was only a concerted effort by the chase group headed by Chris Delaney and Jason English that eventually brought the field back together. A series of attacks then followed in spirited racing led by Sam and Jason then Chris and Liam, but it was Liam and Sam who prevailed taking first and second to Jason then Chris in the A grade finish honours.
Simon Andrews took the honours in B grade after a successful partnership with Brandon Conway who took 1st in D grade to Richard Rienstra in second. In C Grade Pieter Nieuwoudt crossed the line in first followed by Jim Harper and Simon Bank.

Liam and Sam off the front for most of the race Jim, Simon B and Pieter jockey for position.  Simon A and Brandon worked together to take 1st in their respective categories.

Point Score Series
The point score system will be operating to determine the Road Series Champion with points allocated as follows:
• 5 for attending
• 3 for wearing club kit or team kit if a contracted rider
• 3,2 & 1 for the first three places in each grade
The system is designed to reward club spirit as well as ability. After the first week Liam leads the point score just one point ahead of the Richard. See the table of all results here.

Juniors Set the Pace
The action was just as fierce in the juniors with a strong field contesting the honours in the 4 km relay event. In the end there was only 10 seconds between the teams with Leighton, Jonah and Conor taking it out by just 5 seconds over 2 placed team Sam C, Alani and Harriet over Boyd, Sam H and Billy.
The individual handicap race was hard fought with Jonah getting the Commissaire’s mention for his Marcel Kittel “man of steel” race face and a special mention from the President for new comer Billy wheeling out for only the 3rd time with a performance that suggests great things ahead. Conor gets a special mention as the most improved racer. Over the finish line it was Boyd followed by Sam C and then Leighton.

Next week the juniors racing will be preceded by a core strength session so if you have competitive youngsters you’d best get to the track early.
